Located in Xieng Khoang plateu, Phonsavan is an ideal destination to experience the feeling of far west of the USA even you are in Laos. Also, bullfighting is also held every New Year. It is also famous by the Plain of Jars – an ancient architectural complex shaped like strange jars.
2. Wat Phu
This is a religious complex of ancient Khmer, located on Phu Kao Mountain, Champasak Province. This Hindu temple dated from the 11th century to the 13th century and was once part of the Khmer empire stretching from the far southwest Angkor in Cambodia.
Wat Phu may be small compared to Angkor but sprawlinghouses, the marsh with creeping crocodiles and broken stems has created a very mysterious atmosphere.
3. Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng is a tourist city, about three hours away from Vientiane. Founded as early as the 14th century with the name Mouang Song, then the French have changed to the current name when they occupied the city.
It is famous place for the weathered limestone hills that any Laos tour operator will offer to you. Located along the Nam Song River, there are many activities for visitors such as kayaking, snorkeling or hiking. Around here, there are villages of ethnic Hmong.
Laos’ capital was once a French colony. So visitors can easily encounter the effects of the French on the streets here. The most attractive destination here is Pha That Luang – a Buddhist architecture dating from 1586 – 49 meters high and is said to keep the Buddhist treasures.
An otherattractive destination is Wat Si Muang – a temple on the ruins of the ancient Khmer temple, and also a good place to buy textile product for tourists.
5. Luang Prabang
This is the most famous tourist destinations and used to be the capital of Laos in the past. Luang Prabang is located at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, the city is the gathering place of many monasteries and Buddhist temples.
Around here there are plenty of waterfalls and tourists can visit the elephant in some places. The night market at the end of the main street is also the right place to buy souvenirs or to taste fried moss – a specialty of Luang Prabang.
